alpine-k8s
Alpine-K8s Overview
Secure your stack with a hardened Alpine-K8s image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.
Alpine-K8s is a minimal Alpine Linux image bundled with essential Kubernetes tools, including kubectl, helm, and kustomize. It is purpose-built for CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes jobs, initContainers, and operational scripting tasks that require multiple Kubernetes CLI tools in a lightweight environment.
Try It Out
Print the help menu to take the image for a test run:
docker run --rm reg.mini.dev/alpine-k8s kubectl --helpYou should see the kubectl help output with available commands and options.
Check available tools
To verify the Kubernetes tools installed in the image:
docker run --rm reg.mini.dev/alpine-k8s kubectl version --clientdocker run --rm reg.mini.dev/alpine-k8s helm versionConfigure kubectl with KUBECONFIG
To use kubectl with your Kubernetes cluster configuration, mount your kubeconfig file:
docker run --rm \
-e KUBECONFIG=/home/nonroot/.kube/config \
-v $HOME/.kube/config:/home/nonroot/.kube/config:ro \
reg.mini.dev/alpine-k8s kubectl get nodesThis mounts your local kubeconfig file into the container and runs kubectl get nodes to list cluster nodes.
Technical Considerations
The Alpine-K8s image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.
Alpine-K8s built by Minimus:
- Runs as root to support required functions as does the public image.
- Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.
The Payoff
A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
- See the risk reduction dashboard for a detailed CVE comparison over the past 30 days.
- Review the compliance report to see the default hardening and security configurations for the image.
