Try It Out
In this example we will deploy Fluentd on a Kubernetes cluster using the Minimus Fluentd Helm chart. Fluentd will collect container logs from your cluster nodes and expose Prometheus metrics.
Step 1: Start Cluster
If you have a cluster to work with, skip this step. Otherwise, start a Minikube cluster. Deployment instructions
Step 2: Create Namespace
Create a namespace:
kubectl create ns fluentd
Step 3: Deploy the Helm Chart
Deploy the Minimus Helm chart:
helm install my-fluentd oci://helm.mini.dev/fluentd \
--version 0.5.3 \
-n fluentd \
--wait
If you want to override the chart's defaults, go to the Values tab, save a copy locally with your changes. Deploy the chart with your overrides using -f values.yaml:
helm install my-fluentd oci://helm.mini.dev/fluentd \
--version 0.5.3 \
-f values.yaml \
-n fluentd \
--wait
Step 4: Verify Fluentd is Running
Confirm the chart deployed successfully and Fluentd started:
kubectl get pods -n fluentd -l app.kubernetes.io/name=fluentd
You should see output similar to:
NAME READY STATUS RESTARTS AGE
my-fluentd-xxxxx 1/1 Running 0 2m
Step 5: Test Metrics Endpoint
Verify Fluentd is collecting metrics by port-forwarding to the metrics port:
kubectl port-forward -n fluentd daemonset/my-fluentd 24231:24231
In another terminal, check the Prometheus metrics endpoint:
curl -sf http://localhost:24231/metrics
You should see Prometheus-format metrics output including fluentd_input_status_num_records_total and other Fluentd metrics.
Step 6: Clean Up
Uninstall the chart and delete the namespace to remove all resources:
helm uninstall my-fluentd -n fluentd
kubectl delete namespace fluentd
