\n\n# GitHub Actions Runner Scale Set Helm Chart\n\nA Helm chart for deploying an AutoScalingRunnerSet that enables autoscaling of self-hosted GitHub Actions runners on Kubernetes. The GitHub Actions Runner Scale Set Helm chart automates deployment and configuration of GitHub Actions runner scale sets in Kubernetes clusters using Minimus images.\n\n\n## {{icon-list-search}} Prerequisites\n\n- A subscription to the Minimus images included in the chart\n- A running Kubernetes cluster (v1.21 or higher is recommended)\n- `kubectl` installed and configured\n- Helm v3.8 or higher for OCI support ([Installation instructions](https://helm.sh/docs/intro/install/))\n- Cluster Admin privileges\n- The **GitHub Actions Runner Scale Set Controller** (`gha-runner-scale-set-controller`) chart must be installed in the cluster before deploying runner scale sets\n\n**Note**: This chart creates `AutoscalingRunnerSet` Custom Resources that are managed by the ARC controller. The controller chart must be installed first to register the required CRDs and start the controller.\n\n

\n\n## {{icon-rocket}}Try It Out\n\nIn this example we will deploy a GitHub Actions runner scale set on a Kubernetes cluster using the Minimus GitHub Actions Runner Scale Set Helm chart. The scale set will register self-hosted runners that autoscale based on workflow demand.\n\n

\n\n### Step 1: Start Cluster\n\n

\n\nIf you have a cluster to work with, skip this step. Otherwise, start a Minikube cluster. [Deployment instructions](https://minikube.sigs.k8s.io/docs/start/?arch=%2Flinux%2Fx86-64%2Fstable%2Fbinary+download)\n\n

\n\n### Step 2: Create Secret\n\n

\n\nFirst, create a namespace:\n\n```\nkubectl create ns gha-runner-scale-set\n```\n\nNext, create a Kubernetes secret for the Minimus token so Helm will be able to pull images from the Minimus registry:\n\n```\nkubectl create secret docker-registry minimus-registry \\\n --docker-server=reg.mini.dev \\\n --docker-username=minimus \\\n --docker-password={{pull-token}} \\\n --namespace=gha-runner-scale-set\n```\n\n

\n\n### Step 3: Deploy the Helm Chart\n\n

\n\nFirst, ensure the ARC controller is installed. Then deploy the runner scale set:\n\n```\nhelm install my-gha-runner-scale-set {{oci-url}} \\\n -n gha-runner-scale-set \\\n --set githubConfigUrl=\"https://github.com/YOUR_ORG\" \\\n --set githubConfigSecret.github_token=\"ghp_YOUR_TOKEN\" \\\n --wait\n```\n\nIf you want to override the chart's defaults, go to the Values tab, save a copy locally with your changes. Deploy the chart with your overrides using `-f values.yaml`:\n\n```\nhelm install my-gha-runner-scale-set {{oci-url}} \\\n -f values.yaml \\\n -n gha-runner-scale-set \\\n --wait\n```\n\n

\n\n### Step 4: Verify GitHub Actions Runner Scale Set is Running\n\n

\n\nConfirm the AutoscalingRunnerSet was created:\n\n```\nkubectl get autoscalingrunnersets.actions.github.com -n gha-runner-scale-set\n```\n\nYou should see output similar to:\n\n```\nNAME ENTERPRISE ORGANIZATION REPOSITORY GROUP MIN MAX DESIRED RUNNING FINISHED STATUS AGE\nmy-gha-runner-scale-set 2m\n```\n\n

\n\n### Step 5: Verify Runner Registration\n\n

\n\nCheck that the runner scale set has registered with GitHub:\n\n```\nkubectl get autoscalingrunnersets.actions.github.com my-gha-runner-scale-set -n gha-runner-scale-set -o yaml\n```\n\nVerify the `spec.githubConfigUrl` matches your organization or repository URL. When workflows trigger, the controller will automatically scale runner pods up and down.\n\n

\n\n### Step 6: Clean Up\n\n

\n\nUninstall the chart and delete the namespace to remove all resources:\n\n```bash\nhelm uninstall my-gha-runner-scale-set -n gha-runner-scale-set\nkubectl delete namespace gha-runner-scale-set\n```\n\n
